Green tea has been presented as one of the healthiest things for your body. It has been indicated in fighting many diseases, including Alzheimer’s disease, cancer and heart disease. But what many people don’t know is that the key healthy ingredient in green tea is that of the antioxidant EGCG.
EGCG varies by the brand of tea. A recent study by ConsumerLab.com found that some teas contain a great deal of lead. Ted Copperman, M.D. and president of ConsumerLab tells consumers to beware and know what you are getting. They found significant amounts of lead in many of the Chinese grown teas. But they indicated that it is the leaves that hold the lead. Therefore, remove the leaves before drinking. According to ConsumerLab about 90% of the lead remains in the leaf after brewing.
So what green teas have the most EGCG in them. ConsumerLab found that Lipton contained the highest amounts of EGCG and Bigelow tea bags also did well. The loose tea category, Teavana’s Gyokuro Imperial contained the highest amount of EGCG. While Costco’s Trunature brand of green tea supplements were found to contain the most EGCG for the least cost.
